Making a vb.net application blend in with the Windows theme -

previously used piddle around vb6 develop couple of personal projects. following upgrade windows 7, i've decided piddle vb.net express edition 2010.

if wanted vb6 application blend in visual style of windows, use code , techniques described here. in short, use manifest file , couple of calls within application , of elements similar xp theme applied. if run on 2000, 95 or 98 standard windows app. good.

now i've moved onto vb.net, i've written simple "hello, world" application have absolutely no idea on how make windows 7 theme (eg. font matches system font , widgets styled correctly).

just changing font hack , out of place on machines set-up differently or run different version of windows default font different.

how ensure application matches applied windows theme irrespective of version of windows?

a lot of automatic if create windows forms app. (mostly) use standard native windows controls draw theme colors. there exceptions:

  • the form item template uses default font named microsoft sans serif. you'll have change segoe ui match vista/win7 default. necessary form class, controls put on automatically inherit font. on xp machine, windows font mapper notice font missing , automatically fall mss.

  • the menustrip class uses custom rendering draw menu items. tries match windows style when change rendermode property system way draws doesn't match win7 style. right-click toolbox, choose items , select mainmenu. that's legacy version does use windows draw menus produces proper theme appearance.

  • a similar problem toolstrip. it's legacy version toolbar. hard 1 swallow, doesn't use rebar make tool bar flat , ugly.

there similar problems in wpf added problem wpf doesn't use of standard windows controls. , gets wrong in subtle places.
