c - How to check the status between 2 servers? -

there 2 servers, need know status(live oe dead) each other. method long tcp connecting, there better method? thanks.

i`m no sysadmin, why not use nmap or likes check if ports servers listening on still open? mean, want know if alive or dead, right? when 1 of server crashes, port shouldn´t open anymore.
